The MFT Exam Is Case-Based. Your Study Guide Should Be Too.
A complete study guide for the AMFTRB Marital and Family Therapy National Examination: a readiness check that finds your weakest domains first, all six content domains, and practice vignettes that explain why the wrong answers are wrong.
The national MFT exam doesn’t reward memorizing theory. It rewards reading a family in a short vignette, seeing the system at work, and choosing the most defensible next step while ruling out the options that sound reasonable but miss the point. If you know the material and still feel shaky on case questions, that’s a reasoning gap, not a knowledge gap. This guide is built to close it.
Current as of 2026
The ethics module follows the current AAMFT Code of Ethics, in effect since January 1, 2026. Exam facts were checked against official exam and licensing sources before release.
Who wrote it
Ethan Hale, M.S., LPC — a Licensed Professional Counselor with more than 20 years of practice. I’m not an LMFT, and I’d rather say that up front than have you wonder. What I bring is two decades of clinical work, a study method built on how adults actually learn (foundations first, side-by-side comparisons, active recall and spaced repetition), and one firm rule: every fact in the guide was checked against official sources before release, and every practice question is original.
Who it is for
Marriage and family therapy graduates and associates preparing for the national MFT licensing exam on their own schedule. Oklahoma candidates get a short note on state licensure in the exam-prep module.
How it works
- Start where you’re weakest. The readiness check shows which domains need the most work, so your study time goes where it counts.
- Foundations before application. Systems thinking and the field’s founders come first, then the models, then the clinical decisions the exam asks about.
- Side-by-side comparisons. Models, concepts and techniques in tables, so similar ideas stop blurring together the week before the exam.
- Practice vignettes with full reasoning. Each gives the best answer and explains why the other choices are weaker.
- Recall built in. Modules open with questions on what you studied before, so it sticks.
